OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POSTThe UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education (UNESCO IESALC) together with The UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa (UNESCO Office in Harare) are developing a joint project to support the engagement, participation and promotion of females in the higher education sector in the African region. As part of the International Women´s Day 2021 celebrations, UNESCO IESALC launched on 8 March 2021 the report The report analyzed several areas of women participation in HE: research, teaching, STEM, management, etc. The report highlighted gender inequalities in Africa with women underrepresentation in HE. As a result, a pilot project investigated three selected African countries (Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda) – Supporting women participation in higher education in Eastern Africa: building sustainable and equitable higher education systems in Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda. Following up on the pilot project, UNESCO will now further investigate other countries in the region. Under the overall authority of the Director of UNESCO IESALC, and the direct supervision of the Project Coordinator, the intern will contribute to the execution of the Project under the Education Programme and Extra Budgetary projects at UNESCO IESALC. Working as part of the interdisciplinary team at UNESCO IESALC, in collaboration with education stakeholders at different levels, the intern will carry out the following duties and responsibilities: Assist in collecting and analyzing data. Facilitate with case selection and validation of cases. Contribute to organization of online meetings. Support the preparation of various project deliverables, such as a written report, a video campaign, design and translation of documents, etc. Support in advocacy and outreach activities. Carry out any other duty considered relevant to the fulfilment of the work plan of the project at the request of the Director/Project Coordinator. Long DescriptionAfter completion of the assignment, the intern will have: 1. Acquired an in-depth knowledge of the Education-sector programme (with a focus on Higher Education and Women issues in Africa) related to UNESCO’s areas of competence. 2. Learnt how to deal with diverse stakeholders from various cultural backgrounds. 3. Attained project management; setting particular objectives and develop appropriate mediation, monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. 4. Gained solid working knowledge of the operations of and with an intergovernmental organization. 5. Subjects: Fields of Social Sciences, Education, Gender studies and International Development. Language skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in the English language AND working knowledge of French, Spanish, or Portuguese.DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONSDesired Skills in one of the following areas: Research and data analysis Visual design Video editing Proposal writing Desired Knowledge on Higher Education of one of the following regions: • Africa • Latin American and the CaribbeanTERMS AND CONDITIONS Start date: October 2022. Location: Remote – this is a fully teleworking role. Team members are responsible for ensuring they have a reliable high speed internet connection and the necessary technology to undertake the job.
